Something’s Wrong With Malaysia

Posted in Crime & Law, Culture, Human Rights by Elliott Back on August 2nd, 2006.

There’s something strange about Malaysia. Even though most of its citizens are conservative muslims, the rest are conservative whatever-they-ares. The country is notorious for censorship. Here’s just three random examples from the BBC:

  1. Malaysia outlaws unsuitable names
  2. Botox ban for Malaysian Muslims
  3. Kiss warning to Malaysia tourists

Tourist aren’t allowed to kiss because, “kissing and hugging [isn't] acceptable to Malaysian citizens” according to Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz. According to the 2004 Global Sex Survey by condom manufacturer Durex, Malaysian’s are the second most-virgin (losing to Vietnam), and the sixth least-sexed. So, if abstinence is the goal of censorship, the banning of public affection, and other laws in Malaysia, it’s probably working.

I wonder what would happen if you correlate things like “standard of living” and “GDP” with sexual satisfaction and cultural tolerance.  It’s probably no accident that well-to-do countries are often made up of more open societies.

Japan is one of the richest countries in Asia, but I think they still have a lot of cultural strappings. Generally though, your theory appears plausible.

  3. I think that’s about right, give or take a few hundred cultural historical differences! Some of my friends here think that western society is on the brink of downfall similar to the Roman Empire or the end of the renaissance period. Not quite sure that I agree but I can see where they’re coming from in terms of historical cycles.

I think that the correlation might be in the opposite direction than what you indicate. As countries move away from agricultural societies and into more consumer-driven cultures (meaning, higher GDP), focus shifts away from satisfying needs to satisfying desires. Wants are fundamental in a capitalist society — we wouldn’t be motivated to buy without people telling us constantly to satisfy our wants. So sexual pleasure naturally becomes more acceptable, and marriage less important.

I suspect that most responses are based on a short tourist visit to Malaysia. It is true that emotions are supressed but that does not mean that sensual activities do not take place…they are just more discrete. Malaysian men often go to Thailand to break out of the mould and local girls, once assured of discretion are beautiful sensual women….and very rewarding. You must understand the cullture and then the benefits flo.

  9. these countries are just self centered, they are not open for new things.. hope can they evolve into a much better countries if they can't put small things like this into consideration.
