Japanese Emoticon List

Posted in Japan, Language by Elliott Back on February 27th, 2007.

Here’s a pretty cool list of the top 30 or so Japanese Emoticons. Asian emoticons generally seem to come in the following form:

emoticon ::= ear (eye mouth/nose eye) ear

The trick is that you have to visualize a face laid out horizontally instead of vertically, after which the Asian-style emoticon directly resembles a human face:

  • (^_^)
  • (>_< )>
  • (^_^;)
  • (ToT)
  • m(_ _)m
  • (^^;)
  • ( ̄ー ̄)
  • (≧∇≦)
  • ( ̄□ ̄;)
  • (#^.^#)

I like the last one best (#^.^#) Some other lists of emoticons can be found below:

  15. Mangoflavor says:

    Actually “>.<" is troubled. it's two eyes pressed together (kinda like saying "I don't wanna see/hear")
    <.< is a shy look to left
    <_< = annoyed/ashamed to look at something "stupid"

    -.- or -_- = annoyed
    x.X = exhausted/troubled
    @.@ = confused
    ._. = disappointed
    o.o = looking (questioning)
    o.O = wondering
    o_o = wondering/surprised
    O.O = surprised/shocked
    Q(°A°Q) = "put em up" (raising fist. Q = fist, ° = eyes, A = opened mouth. theoretically you could erase the bottom two lines so you just have a triangle)
    =3= = "blah", kinda lazy look or (also "cbf")
    and so on..

    at least that's how I use them in a chat…

    (°w°)/)) *wave*

  16. Mackenzie says:

    Ok so I have a friend that I talk to online and he always does this: ^^

    I dont know what this means and I would like to figure out

    Thanks

    • Hiki says:

      ” ^^ ” Is a happy face. Its equivalent to :) or :D and is almost giggly. It’s also drawn like ” ^.^ ” or ” ^_^ ” or ” ^w^ ” ” ^o^ ” Which are similar.
