China’s Divorce Rate Up 21.2%

Posted in China, Culture by Elliott Back on March 1st, 2005.

China Digitial News points out a story from People’s Daily Online about rising divorce rates in China. In 2004, as opposed to 2003, 1.613 million couples divorced, up 21.2%. This increase comes about in the face of simplified divorce proceedures and a modernized view of marriage.

Some experts call for more caution in educating the people about marriage, other call it modernization. In America, it’s now mostly a non-issue. But is this good or bad for a country?

So now China is in the spot lights with a high divorce rate. It would be interesting to have a comparison few relevant countries concerning the most important reasons for divorce. This kind of statistic would provide us plenty useful information.

This is an old story so I wonder what the effect of the current economic slowdown in China has had on their divorce rate.

To answer a big question like that you would really need to look at the statistical reasons people are divorcing. It’s good for the country if people are divorcing because they are unhappy for real reasons. But if people are just divorcing because they are lazy and won’t even try to get martial help with their issues then it could be bad.
