Hoang Thuy Linh’s “Mistake”

Posted in Vietnam, Culture, Sex by Elliott Back on October 28th, 2007. [Del.icio.us]

The difference between America and Vietnam is summarized by the public reaction to Hoang Thuy Linh and Paris Hilton’s sex tapes. While Paris’s film shot the young American heiress to instant celebrity and cemented her hold on the American public, Hoang Thuy Linh’s television show was canceled. She gave an apology on national TV for violating her good-girl image:

“I made a mistake, a terrible mistake. I apologize to you, my parents, my teachers and my friends.”

An Associated Press article Vietnam Is Having Paris Hilton Moment quotes a few interesting Vietnamese on the issue:

  • “A good girl must keep herself clean until she is married,” Khanh said. “Thuy Linh should be condemned.”
  • charges of “spreading depraved cultural items”
  • “People will forgive him, but not her”
  • “it’s OK for a boy to have sex at that age, but not for a girl”
  • the episode underscored the “dark side of globalization” and warned that a flood of foreign influences “threaten Vietnam’s cultural foundation.”

In the 21st century, like all previous centuries, the morality police and gender double-standards live on. How long is it going to be before global morality becomes fully modernized?

    “global morality”?
    never read something that ridiculous.

You can’t sum up cultural issues like this one, with this simple sentence.

It’s true you point out something culturally interesting but the end of article is truly disappointing.

I do not know any people who haven’t made mistakes but most of us do not have to endure our mistakes being made public. Hoang Thuy Linh’s mistake was exploited by unscrupulous persons. I feel sorry for Ms. Hoang and the shame she has had to endure but I have nothing but contempt for those who exposed this girl’s very personal error to the world.

I agree with you Kurt. It seems to me that the one who ought to be castrated is her ex-boyfriend who obviously made sure that her face was visible when he did the dastardly deed. If we all videoed our sex acts and showed them in public how would we feel? Surely there must be a law against this sort of thing that those who expose others to ridicule and punishment should be the ones to face the hard edge of the law.

Viet Nam should come up with a law that protects children from being exploited by opportunists, and this scumbag (her ex-boyfriend) should be punished severely (perhaps, castrated!!). Thuy Linh is still a child, she is only 19, not at the legal age of 21 yet!
Let this be a lesson for young girls out there who are so trusting of bottom feeders like Thuy Linh’s ex-boyfriend. This scumbag will do anything for monetary gain including humiliating his trusted girlfriend and exposing his skinny, girl-like, frail looking body in the sex tape.

Linh cant be exempted from condemnation. Look at the “show” closely! She really showed her face to the camera/you. And later-on, fotos everywhere show her with very thick-skin face (not a regretful one as people may expected).

Shouldnt be like that. If you don’t agree with me, you better spend sometimes to look at the current of the Vietnamese history of morality.

(They even told me she had practiced crying for hours before her I-am-sorry show, and went with friends to self-award a round of Karaoke).

It is unfair that Vietname medias only focus on this girl but forgot about the main source, who acted, recorded, kept, then let the video unsecurely into hands of his friends. Vu Hoang Viet, her ex-boyfriend should be blame for this whole mess. On the other hands, instead of warning the foreign influence that threatens Vietname cultural foundation, Vietnamese Communist Education System should also be responsible for teaching more political communist doctine rather than morality. Less freedom of religion is also another main factor. In the past, VN students who were sent to study oversea, only selected in the top of class. They were very respect in the society. These scholars were expected to bring home not only new ideas but also their morality and wisdom that can build the next generation to come. Today, corruption is verywhere in VN. Viet is a son of a high lieutenant police chief. In fact, his father base salary could not afford to send Viet to study oversea. Instead of visiting home as a role model and a high educator, Viet has shown his immorality. He seems wanted to be a sex star rather than a well educator.

All of the sweetest girls have their explorative side. Clearly this was meant to be private and obviously the only poor judgment on her part was in befriending an male of extremely low character. Not too uncommon for a girl of 19.

It is a great shame that she will continue to be tormented by great masses of idiots asuming an artificial moral “high ground”. And any condemnation is equally inappropriate as the celebrity worship offered Paris Hilton for her own debut in unintended distribution of private material.

“it’s OK for a boy to have sex at that age, but not for a girl”

So if it’s ok for a guy to sleep around at that age then who is he supposed to be sleeping with if it’s not ok for a girl?…
Unless that comment is in fact promoting homosexuality?
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not against homosexuality!

And the whole “People will forgive him, but not her”
What is that about? He’s the one in the wrong! Did she ask for that tape to be made publicly available? I highly doubt it.
