China’s Military Intelligence Works Big
According to the Register, the Chinese military has build an enormous model of the China-India border in Huangyangtan, a remote village:
The model measures 900×700 meters, and models an area of 450×350 kilometers. So, the big question is why would China build a 250,000:1 scale model of a mountainous border?

I used to be a British Infantry officer and military models like this are only really used for two reasons.
The first one is in orders groups to explain to others what you’re all about to do in the upcoming battle/operation.
The second is at a military academies, staff colleges and the like where officers at various stages of their careers simulate or reproduce previous historical battles for learning purposes and strategy or tactical discussions.

Assuming, of course, that it is a military type model and not for example, something to do with a museum or geographical centre.

You are putting up a good question, but hard to answer here. Due to the net censorship in China, I guess you won’t get that many comments from them either although it would have been interesting to read them.

Is the model 1:500 or 1:250000 ?
The area of the model is certainly 1/250000 that of the modelled region, but I possibly don’t know how map scale works. I think it’s 1:500 though!
