K-drama & Weak Women
Our family has never been a big fan of Korean drama shows. In the last seven years that we’ve been in Canada, homesickness has never expressed itself in the form of wanting to watch Korean TV shows. There are reasons besides just our lack of interest. Videotapes of TV shows are hard to come by where we live and until recently, the consensus was that K-drama just wasn’t all that good.
Recently though, my parents have been watching some K-drama. Perhaps it’s the lack of entertainment, or rather, headache my sister and I used to provide for my parents since we both left for college. Also, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding a show called “Winter Sonata”. It has been a huge hit in Japan, and maybe that bit of international recognition sparked my parents’ interest. So my dad came home with 5 episodes of “Winter Sonata” on videotape. After playing with our VCR, which hadn’t been used since we got a DVD player, we finally sat down to watch “Winter Sonata”. And I must say, I was utterly disappointed.
Basically the story goes like this. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy gets hit by a car and dies. Few years later, girl is engaged to a childhood friend. But wait, her new client looks just like her first love! And he’s going out with her childhood friend who seems intent on ruining our poor heroine’s life for some odd reason. So far, that’s all I’ve watched, but I can guess the rest.
It wasn’t just that I didn’t like the show. I was starting to get mad and frustrated at the show. I could forgive the overused plot, the stereotypical characterizations and half-decent acting. What I couldn’t get over was the heroine. I know I was supposed to sympathize with her, but I was wanting to smack her. She was wimpy, passive and couldn’t stand up for herself. At least, that’s how I saw her character. The writers of the show probably wanted to portray her as a hardworking, intelligent career woman, but the number of scenes devoted to making her look capable is miniscule compared to the number of scenes that made me want to smack some sense into her. I would have been rooting for the villain had she not been so manipulating. The villain had character traits that I would have liked. Aside from her horrible hair and evil schemes, she seemed independent and actually went after the things she wanted. At any rate, to break the glass ceiling, which I would imagine is lower and thicker in Korea, people like our heroine wouldn’t stand a chance.
The show could have been so much more. The characters could have been more complex than just good and evil. The story could have moved much faster. I could probably get the gist of it from the first 2 episodes and the last 2 episodes.
Keep in mind that I’ve only watched the first 5 out of 20 episodes. My dad claimed that I “didn’t get it” because I had become too much of a banana - yellow outside, white inside. Still, I’m not sure I want to “get it” if it involves not saying what I want to say or having to swallow indignant situations. Especially if “it” involves being a silent, dainty lady who doesn’t seem to mind being stepped on.

weak women and k-drama is not really the norm. Look at Jang geum, who given, doesn’t stand up for herself a lot, but has morals and all that. Or Kim Sam-soon, she’s a lot of things, but weak isn’t one of them.
I’m not even Asian and I think k-drama is way better than American TV. And I don’t think there is a weak heroine epidemic.

Let put in this way, the lead actress character portray in WLS is not weak. Looking into Asian culture, respect and listen and obey the eldest are still very much an important foundamental of the culture and upbringing of eastern people. Since it is a love story so, when it comes to love stories.. sacrificises & family feelings and honour are very important ingredient in Asian drama.
You may try to watch from an Asian point of culture not so much being just a love story between man & woman, or the characteristic of the character.
But I do agree with you that the story could have been round up in lesser chapters.

I am sad after watching the show not because of the story line but how much time I have wasted for the thing like that. After listening to the theme song, which was translated to my language, I felt that it was good to watch the show hoping to be more understanding about the song’s inspiration. However, it is a disappointment. The main characters are incapable of fighting for love, which is what the show embraced about. If they think love is so great, why don’t they let these poor souls stand up for it rather than being so pathetic and incapable. The complication of emotions isn’t conveyed effectively making the movie less drawing than it could be. On top of that, the redundance of many dialogues that deviate the focus off the love story causing a difficulty to fully grasp it. I also agree with the point that it is so predictable that makes the movie boring.
Not to be so negative, THE THEME SONG IS GREAT.

i enjoy watching most of the shows of abs cbn especially only you and wowowee. i like only you its because jo hyun jae or TJ HAN is so true on what he felt for his only love and it tickle in the heart of everybody. wowowee makes me laugh and cry. i laugh because the show is really nice and we can see people have hopes in thier eyes and wowowee put that to every person who believe in wowowee…. i cry because we can see people who are helping one another …. this is the only show i really appreciate for showing us how people live and help each other. i cry because theres are plenty of people who opened there hearts to people who are needy….. thanks for your show its really warm my heart….

i love k-dramas, even though i’ve only seen three.. [the one in question being my first one] but i think part of it is moving to the west coast & gett’n better acquaint’d with my heritage
anyway, yes. i definitely felt the same sentiments as you did from watch’n the movie. but what’s worse is that what fuel’d my impression of korean girls be’n meek and passive in the movies is that this is actually the behavior that is encouraged and well look’d upon. thus, making other girls who aren’t like that.. not as well look’d upon? that’s why i loved kimsamsoon, but if you actually re-enact that in real life, people will look at you like you’re outta line. oh well, i guess it’s a start.

I love korean telenovelas especially the ones that are shown in abs-cbn. My favorite korean dramas include only you (by the way, i really love jo hyeon jae and han chae young… i think they look good together), memories of bali, lovers in paris and spring day (I love MOB and SD because of Jo in Sung). I also like Jewel in the palace. Im a nursing student kasi kaya medyo nakakarelate ako sa kanya… Who knows baka magamit ko pa sa board exam ung mga cnasabi ni jang geum. Pero Kapamilya and kabarkada talaga ako… ABS-CBN still rocks!

Most of the series’ stories ideas do get recycled (dying from cancer, amnesia, passing by one another without realizing it, stupid love-triangles/rectangles, etc., etc. . . .) and are predictable, like half the time. But there are a few gems that sometimes don’t (as said before, My Lovely Sam-Soon, fictional historical dramas such as Jang Dong-Geum, or Emperor of the Sea, etc.). A few popular ones are those based on manwha (K-comics), like Full House and Goong (they’re even making a Goong 2 TV series). I suppose it mostly depends on your taste in dramas - tragedy-drama, suspense-drama, action-drama, comedy-drama, family-drama . . .

i love watching korean novela’s since it really touches my heart… galing ksi walang pasikot sikot ang story and they have the same chracters for the whole teleserye… my girl is now being aired here in the phillipines and it was such a nice story…. tnx abs-cbn for all the korean telenovelas… they had the right pick of stories and it really made so well….iba talaga ang kapamilya….

Hi! I’m certified KAPUSO before but when I heard to my friend u are certified KAPAMILYA that abs-cbn is really good esp. in korean telenovela like MY GIRL and LOVE TO KILL but out of curiosity I’ve tried to watch My Girl and WWWOOOWWW, Amazing ,its Fantastic. Now I”m speechless its Great this is really good that I’ve ever seen. And Now I’m 100% sure that I’M CERTIFIED KAPAMILYA. I Happy now watching all korean drama. THANKS TP ABS-CBN for making us happy.

I really enjoyed watching My Girl…sayang kasi hindi pinapalabas sa TFC dito sa California but luckily blessed ppl upload it on youtube.com =D I watched the entire series overnight! Ganun ako ka-obsessed to the MAX lol. Anyway, bilib ako sa philippine telenovelas pero i’m more impressed with korean telenovelas because they have such unique stories and unique locations. They also have very talented actors such as Lee Dae Hee (so funny) and Lee Dong Wook *blush blush* I just have to say kasi very slow ang pacing ng mga soap operas sa Pinas. No original stories, both stations keep on imitating plots from each other. Anyway, My Girl is the best! five star talaga!

I don’t agree if we say that all women characters in Korean drama are weak. In fact, I found that many K-Drama construct the lead female character with strong and independent personality in their everyday lives include within their relationship with the lead male characters. Just watch Sassy Girl Chun Hyang, Wonderful Life, Full House, etc. The lead females are able to affect or even dominate the lead male character, and change the lead males character to be better persons. That’s not characters of weak women at all!! I found that K-Drama depiction of women is more positive than other Asian Soap Operas, include Indonesia, my own country.
Most of all, K-Drama is very unique, n distict from any other soap operas from other country!
It’s very enjoyable and refreshing to watch them!
